Finally all the agitation over the regressive portrayal of a marriage between a 9-year-old boy and a 18-year-old girl in Sony TV’s show ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki‘ has been addressed. The show has now been moved to a later time slot. The Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) had directed Sony Entertainment to move its controversial TV show “Pehredaar Piya Ki” to the late night 10 pm slot and run it with a scroll saying it does not promote child marriage and also a declaration that this is a work of fiction. BCCC had ordered them to run the scroll since they did not want any misinterpretation that the show advocates child marriage. The council had received close to 140 complaints last month from viewers demanding action against the show for promoting child marriage. An online petition was also started by the viewers, asking the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to ban the show. Close to almost One lakh people had signed a petition on change.org urging Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani to ban the show.The ministry forwarded the complaint rto BCCC. Sony Entertainment Television finally released an official statement today: “As per the decision of BCCC we are shifting the time slot of Pehredaar Piya Ki to 10pm: Mon-Fri. The change will reflect from 22nd August’17 onwards.”‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ was launched on 17th July on Sony TV and since the day the show was launched it has been slammed on social media for its “regressive” content with many viewers accusing it of promoting child marriage. Right from actors, producers, youth to social activists are condemning the basic content of the show. It is a family drama based on a nine-year-old boy, Ratan (Afaan Khan), and his marriage to 18-year-old Diya (Tejasswi Prakash).The first episode of the show was actually trending and the show became a topic of discussion for everyone.No wonder Pehredaar Piya Ki opened to a great ratings of 1 plus for the channel . The show ran into more troubles after the rumours of a ‘Honeymoon’ sequence between the child and the lady spread. Though the makers denied the reports later.The show is produced by Sumeet Mitaal and Shashi Mittal, who have made shows like ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’ and ‘Punarvivaah’ in the past. Recently the producers of the show had a press conference where they maintained that the show is not regressive and everything shown in the show is well justified.
